Protect Prairie dogs! Join us Monday, March 21st, and Help Kill House Bill 16-1010

By Wildlands Defense In Colorado, a house bill has been introduced to the State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee entitled " A bill for an act concerning the authorization process for the release of destructive rodent pests into a county." If passed, this bill will make it increasingly difficult to save prairie dogs and the land and wildlife they maintain. The purpose of this bill is to make relocations more difficult than they already are since more people are showing concern and love for this keystone species which is making developers and ranchers nervous. This bill will require the approval of county commissioners and at least two additional entities prior to ANY proposed relocation throughout the state within counties. These restrictions are already required between counties and have effectively limited the conservation of wildlife communities since commissioners rarely approve prairie dog relocations. ...

California Tribes Fight for Water Rights

Industrial civilization has always thrived on the flesh and bones of indigenous peoples. Civilization leaves only whatever scraps of land, water or anything else, needed to indigenous populations to survive, which are too trivial or costly to sweep up. Deep Green Resistance is therefore encouraged to see several California Tribes fighting back. From Circle of Blue: California Indian Tribe Pursues Rights to Groundwater TUESDAY, 28 JULY 2015 05:00 A court test of federal water law by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has implications for the American West. Deep Green Resistance is happy to publish a deeper background story on the massacre by freelance journalist Suzanne Grover. The Maul at Castle Rock by Suzanne Grover Empathy is not reserved for the odd few, it is a characteristic of the mighty, the wise, and the meek who shall inherit the Earth. ...

Activists Continue Fight Against Promenade Mall in Castle Rock

Land developers have reared their ugly heads recently in Castle Rock, Colorado, where they have begun constructions on a 900,00-square-foot abomination called the Promenade Mall. Unfortunately for the local ecosystem, this construction will wipe out the thousands of prairie dogs who live where the mall is being constructed, and will irreparably harm scores of other species which rely on the prairie dogs for maintaining their healthy habitat. To date, several hundred prairie dogs have been buried alive, crushed, trapped or poisoned. ...

Castle Rock Council Sell Out Wildlife, Teach Valuable Lesson in "Governance"

Deep Green Resistance would like to thank the Castle Rock Town Council for reminding us activists why we can’t let up, ever, in our efforts to save the planet. (Hint: It’s mainly because the so-called ‘stewards’ of the community sure as shit aren’t going to do it.) Last night, at the Town Meeting, the Council sat and ’listened’ to nearly 25 individuals deliver impassioned, eloquent, enlightening speeches imploring the Council to delay (not even cancel - merely delay) construction on the Promenade Mall, so we could relocate the prairie dogs being exterminated by the construction. ...

Lawsuit Launched to Protect Rare Utah and Colorado Wildflowers from Oil Development

By the Center for Biological Diversity More Than 90 percent of Imperiled Beardtongues Threatened by Oil, Gas Projects SALT LAKE CITY (Dec 30, 2014)— Seven conservation groups filed a formal notice of intent to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today for denying Endangered Species Act protection to two imperiled wildflowers in Utah and Colorado. The Service proposed to protect the White River and Graham’s beardtongues in August 2013 after determining that 91 percent of Graham’s beardtongue populations and 100 percent of White River beardtongues were threatened by the impacts of oil and gas development. The Service then reversed course in August 2014, withholding protection based on its claim that threats to the species were ameliorated by a last-minute, voluntary “conservation agreement” the Service entered into with the Bureau of Land Management and several state and county agencies with active roles in energy development. ...

Time is Short: Where Do We Draw the Line? The Keystone XL Pipeline and Beyond

Editor’s Note: This article originally ran March 20, 2013, in the Deep Green Resistance News Service. We are republishing the entire Time is Short series, and considering that the newly elected US Senate now has enough votes to pass approval of the Keystone XL Pipeline and has made it second on its list of priorities, we think this is especially relevant. The Keystone XL Pipeline is without question the largest environmental issue we in North America face today. It’s not the largest in the sense that it is the most destructive, or the largest in terms of size. But it has been a definitive struggle for the movement; it has brought together a wide variety of groups, from mainstream liberals to radicals and indigenous peoples to fight against a single issue continuously for several years. It has forged alliances between tree-sitting direct actionists and small rural landowners, and mobilized people from across the country to join the battles in Washington and Texas, as well as at the local offices of companies involved in building the pipeline in their own communities. It has also posed serious questions to us as a movement about how we will effectively fight those who profit from the destruction of the living world. ...
